Sustainable hotel stays is what we are trying to deliver as part of the guest experience. The adoption of further eco initiatives beyond those detailed below are part of our effort to continuously improve. We have an environmental impact sadly but we are aiming through our Climate Action Plan to reduce that by a further 25% by 2030. Our hotel has ev chargers on site and 12 just across the road so you don’t need to plan ahead.

In 2024 we invested in new EV charging points and secure storage for bikes /maintenance facilities and this year have replaced our business vehicle with a full electric model. We have also installed swift boxes to encourage population recovery which is key to maintaining healthy and diverse ecosytems.

As a Biosphere registered business we have a responsibility and are passionate about preserving the great outdoors while promoting the local community and the economy in an all we do. The concept behind the Biosphere is to change the way we work so that we protect our living and cultural environment but moreover create a sustainable environment for those who live, work and visit this region.

SME Award for Eco Initiatives

The Ship Inn won best small hotel in the SME 2025 Awards because we had shown leadership in trying to implement operational changes to reduce the impact of tourism on the environment and promote eco friendly stays to visitors to Dumfries and Galloway.

The hotel uses low energy LED lightbulbs throughout. We installed motion sensitive lights in the corridors and card activated electricity supplied to the rooms helps reduce wastage,
The restaurant sources locally produced food. Our beef, venison, pork and fish are all sourced from D&G. 60% of our food provisions by value are sourced from a 40 mile radius.
Our electricity supply is powered through 100% renewable energy sources.
We use refillable toiletries in our bathrooms and toilets
We collect rain water to re-use for the window boxes
Our cooking oil is recycled and kitchen waste composted.
We have a communal fridge and water dispenser to reduce electricity consumption within each room and minimise plastic waste.
Our Green initiatives within our beer garden are key to helping biodiversity, reducing waste and our carbon footprint
We have smart thermostatic controls on the radiators in conjunction with an intelligent central heating system to reduce energy use.
We installed 2 EV charging points and a secure bike storage facility in 2024

Reduce water usage through shorter showers and turning off the tap when brushing teeth
Only request a change of towels when required
Turn heating off or down in your rooms when not required
Remove the hotel cards from the card holder to turn off electricity when you go out
