Galloway is a fabulous location for a cycling holiday, and the Ship Inn provides the perfect base for your adventures. We are located in Gatehouse of Fleet, on national cycle route 7 and within an hours drive of four of the 7 Stanes Mountain Bike trails.

As a keen mountain biker himself, your host Jonathan understands what makes a good cycling holiday great and is on hand to provide advice on local routes, both on and off road.  He also takes great care to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

We offer the following facilities for cyclists:

  • Secure, high quality lock up for bicycles
  • Outdoor hot and cold taps
  • Packed lunches
  • Drop off and pick up from mountain bike trails or on road routes

Recharge and refuel ready for another day in the saddle

After a hard day hitting the trails, it’s good to know that there is a little luxury waiting for you back at the Inn. Our spacious bedrooms are extremely comfortable and all have luxurious en-suite facilities. After a long soak to ease those tired muscles you can join us in the restaurant to refuel. We have an extensive menu offering generous portions of the best local produce, and a whisky and gin bar with over 200 malts to choose from.

Road Cycling in Galloway

Galloway is Scotland’s hidden gem. Quiet country roads, stunning coastal routes, rolling hills and some challenging climbs make this often overlooked part of Scotland a great destination for a cycling holiday. From your base at The Ship Inn in Gatehouse of Fleet you can head down towards the Solway Firth where often empty roads meander through picturesque villages and along the beautiful coastline. Alternatively, you can head up into the Galloway forest park and cycle through woodland rich in history and wildlife.

There are numerous circular routes to be enjoyed from the door or alternatively for larger groups we can take you and your bikes to a starting point, allowing you to cycle back to the Inn. If you prefer we can come and pick you up from your destination.

National Cycle Route 7 passes close to our front door, so if you are organising a long distance cycle on this route we are a perfect overnight stop.

With five of the world famous 7 Stanes mountain bike trails within an hours drive of the Inn, as well as numerous forestry trails in the Galloway forest park, if off road is your thing you will be spoilt for choice.

7 Stanes Mountain Bike Trails

The 7 Stanes are seven world renowned mountain biking centres spread across the south of Scotland. The trails at Mabie, Dalbeattie, Ae, Kirroughtree and Glentrool are within an hours drive of the Ship Inn, and all offer beautiful and exhilarating trails for all abilities.

Whether you are a seasoned mountain biker looking for some seriously challenging technical trails, or a family with young children wanting to get out on your bikes and enjoy the beautiful Galloway countryside, you will find plenty to keep you amused.

Hit the Trails at Night

For the thrill of mountain biking at night, there is nowhere better than Galloway Forest Park, the UK’s first dark skies park. The park has very little light pollution, which means that on a clear night you can see over 7,000 stars and planets with the naked eye, with the Milky Way clearly visible.

Living here, we are lucky enough to see it regularly but it still never fails to take our breath away, and we promise that the sight of a galaxy of stars in the clear night sky makes cycling at night even more memorable!
